What are the eligibility requirements for specific gym memberships not listed on the Truemed website?

Edited

Truemed does offer Letters of Medical Necessity (LMNs) for general gym memberships-even if the gym is not a listed Truemed partner. However, there are a few important details to keep in mind when using this type of LMN.

Can I Use a Generic LMN at Any Gym?

Yes, in most cases. If your LMN supports the use of exercise as a medically necessary treatment (for example, to prevent or treat obesity, diabetes, anxiety, etc.), you can use that LMN to request reimbursement for a membership at:

  • Local gyms (e.g., YMCA, Planet Fitness, etc)

As long as the primary purpose of the membership is exercise, and your LMN supports that use, it may be eligible.

Keep in mind: Your HSA/FSA administrator has final approval and may request additional documentation or deny reimbursement based on their interpretation of IRS guidelines.

Requirements for Reimbursement

To submit a reimbursement claim for a non-Truemed partner gym or studio, you’ll typically need:

  1. A valid LMN issued by Truemed

  2. An itemized receipt or proof of purchase showing:

    • The name of the gym or fitness provider

    • Dates of service or membership term

    • The total cost

Limitations

  • Your LMN cannot be used directly at checkout on non-partner websites, since those merchants aren’t integrated with Truemed.

  • We cannot guarantee reimbursement for non-partner gyms, but your LMN will meet standard IRS documentation requirements.
