What Happens If My HSA/FSA Refund Was Sent to a Closed Account?
If you requested a refund for a purchase made with your HSA or FSA card and that account is now closed, unfortunately, Truemed is not able to assist further once the refund has been issued. This can be a frustrating situation, so here’s what you need to know.
Refunds Must Go Back to the Original Payment Method
Truemed is only able to refund the original card used for the purchase.
This is a hard requirement from our payment processor and ensures compliance with IRS regulations.
We cannot issue a refund to a different card, reprocess the transaction, or send a check or alternative form of reimbursement.
What If the Account Is Closed?
If the HSA or FSA account is no longer active, the funds are still sent to that account.
At that point, it is the consumer’s responsibility to contact their former HSA/FSA provider and request access to the returned funds.
In most cases, if you no longer have access to the account, your provider may be able to redirect or reclaim the refund depending on their policies — but this is entirely outside of Truemed’s control.
Why Can’t Truemed Help in This Case?
Once the refund is issued to the original payment method, the funds leave our system and go back through the payment processor to the financial institution that issued your HSA/FSA card.
We do not have access to closed account systems and cannot recall or reroute those funds.
Best Practice: Keep Your Account Open Until All Refunds Are Processed
Before closing an HSA/FSA account, we strongly recommend:
Waiting until all transactions and potential refunds have cleared
Reviewing your purchase history in case a refund may be pending
Confirming with your provider how they handle funds sent to a closed account
If you have any questions about the status of your refund or need documentation to show your HSA/FSA provider, feel free to reach out to us at support@truemed.com. We're happy to help with anything within our control.
