Using Multiple Cards (HSA/FSA + Credit/Debit) at Truemed Checkout

Edited

Overview

Truemed now supports Split Pay, allowing you to use multiple payment methods—such as an HSA/FSA card and a credit/debit card—for a single order. Whether your entire cart is HSA/FSA eligible or only certain items are eligible, this feature gives you the flexibility to split your payment in a way that best suits your needs.

Why Is This Important?

  • Fully Eligible Carts
If you have a large purchase or limited HSA/FSA funds, you can combine your HSA/FSA card with a credit/debit card to cover the rest. This helps you avoid maxing out your HSA/FSA card or worrying about insufficient funds.

  • Mixed Carts
If your cart includes both eligible and non-eligible items, Split Pay lets you use your HSA/FSA card for eligible items and a credit/debit card for any remaining balance. This way, you won’t have to pay upfront and then seek reimbursement for the eligible portion.

How Does It Work?

1. Checkout Screen Options

Depending on whether your cart is entirely HSA/FSA eligible or mixed, you’ll see different payment options at checkout.

  • Fully Eligible Carts

    1. Pay in full with HSA or FSA.

    2. Pay in full with credit or debit card (and later handle any reimbursement yourself, if needed).

    3. Split pay using HSA/FSA plus another card.

  • Mixed Carts

    1. Pay in full with credit or debit card (and optionally seek reimbursement for the eligible items afterward).

    2. Split pay using HSA/FSA for the eligible portion and a credit/debit card for the rest.

2. Splitting Your Payment

If you choose to use two cards for a purchase, here’s what to expect:

  1. Enter Your HSA/FSA Card First

    • You’ll see a field to enter how much you want to charge to your HSA/FSA card.

    • Minimum Amount: $0.50 (Stripe requires at least $0.50 on each payment method).

    • Maximum Amount: The eligible cost of the order (the HSA/FSA portion).

  2. Add Your Secondary Card

    • After entering your HSA/FSA amount, you can add your credit or debit card.

    • This card will automatically cover the remaining balance of the order, which you cannot adjust independently (the HSA/FSA amount you entered determines how much the second card is charged).

  3. Review & Complete Payment

    • You can still adjust the HSA/FSA amount before you complete payment.

    • If there’s an error (e.g., insufficient funds on your HSA/FSA card), you’ll see a message letting you know which card needs attention.

3. Payment Structure

If you split payments, your purchase will be processed as two separate payments:

  • One payment to your HSA/FSA card.

  • One payment to your credit/debit card.

This ensures each card is charged only for the amount you designated (HSA/FSA) or whatever remains of your total.

Common Questions

1. What if my HSA/FSA card gets declined?
If your HSA/FSA card is declined, you’ll see an error message at checkout. You can adjust the amount you plan to place on your HSA/FSA card or use a different card.

2. Can I pay the entire balance on my HSA/FSA if my cart is fully eligible?
Absolutely—if you have enough funds on your HSA/FSA card, simply choose “Pay in full with HSA or FSA.”

3. How do I handle daily spending limits on my HSA/FSA card?
If you’re hitting a daily limit, just split your payment between your HSA/FSA card and a credit/debit card. The system will apply as much as allowed on your HSA/FSA card, and the rest will be charged to your secondary payment method.

4. Do I need to reimburse myself if the cart is fully HSA/FSA eligible?
If you pay the entire amount on your HSA/FSA card, then you typically will not need to worry about reimbursement. If you only pay part of the amount on your HSA/FSA card and part on another card, you also won’t need to reimburse yourself for the HSA/FSA portion. However, if you pay fully with a credit/debit card, you may need to handle reimbursement on your own.
