Understanding Partial HSA/FSA Eligibility for Your Purchases

When shopping with HSA/FSA funds, you may come across items that are only partially eligible for reimbursement. This guide explains what partial eligibility means, how it affects your purchase, and what to expect during checkout.

What is Partial Eligibility?

Partial eligibility means that only a portion of the item's price qualifies for reimbursement through your HSA/FSA. The remaining portion of the cost is considered ineligible. This typically occurs with products that include features or upgrades beyond a basic model.

For example:

  • A mattress with advanced cooling features may only be eligible for the portion of its cost that aligns with a standard mattress.

In these cases, the eligible amount is determined based on comparisons with "base models" or similar items that meet basic eligibility requirements.

How Does Partial Eligibility Work During Checkout?

  1. Complete the Qualification Survey

    • Before entering your payment details, you'll complete a short survey to calculate the eligible amount for HSA/FSA reimbursement.

  2. View Eligible and Ineligible Amounts

    • At the payment screen, your cart will clearly display:

      • HSA/FSA-Eligible Amounts: This is the portion of your purchase that qualifies for reimbursement.

      • Ineligible Amounts: This is the portion that does not qualify for HSA/FSA reimbursement.

  3. Pay for the Full Cart Price

    • You will pay the full price of your cart using your credit/debit card. However, keep in mind that only the eligible portion will be reimbursable through your HSA/FSA account.

    • Instructions for how to submit for HSA/FSA reimbursements can be found here.

Example: A Mattress Purchase

Let’s say you’re buying a mattress with advanced cooling features for $2,791.58:

  • Eligible Amount: $2,459.58 (qualifies for reimbursement).

  • Ineligible Amount: $330 (does not qualify for reimbursement).

You will pay the full $2,791.58 at checkout. When seeking reimbursement from your HSA/FSA, you can only claim the $2,459.58.

Categories Commonly Affected by Partial Eligibility

Partial eligibility is typically seen in the following categories:

  • Mattresses: Eligibility may depend on features or upgrades.

  • Standing Desks: Features like electric adjustability may affect eligibility.

  • Food Items: Only certain dietary products might qualify.

  • Specialty Items: Products like orthopedic shoes or mattress covers (e.g., Eight Sleep) may have unique eligibility rules.

HSA/FSA administrators might request additional documentation or comparisons with “comparable items” in some cases. In these scenarios, the Truemed support team is here to assist you with these documentation requests at support@truemed.com

Why Does Partial Eligibility Exist?

HSA/FSA funds are regulated to ensure they are used for health-related expenses. Features or upgrades that are not deemed medically necessary are often excluded from eligibility.
